The Polokwane Municipality is currently preparing its Transport Operational Plan (TOP) for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. "This plan is being prepared in line with the initial National Transport Operational Plan, developed by the national department of transport. It is intended to outline all the operational requirements and action plans in terms of public transport, traffic management and incident management in the context of spectator travel patterns and match schedules envisaged for the Polokwane Municipality during 2010.
The project will be completed in March 2008," said Ms Thato Matsoku, spokesperson for the Polokwane Municipality. The strategy for the TOP includes the following: • Provision of safe and reliable public transport services. • Identification of key strategic and complementary routes for public, private and freight transport critical to serve the demands of the event. • Provision and enforcement of pedestrian routes on key routes. • Provision of shuttle services. • Improvement of traffic management in the city in terms of traffic signal improvement, implementing intelligent transport solutions such as variable messaging on key routes and managing traffic challenges at stadia and Fan Parks. • Providing park-and-ride facilities and interfaces with the public and parking facilities in general. • The establishment of a transport hub to serve as a major transport service point as well as enforcement of transport regulations.
