FREE HOME LIGHTING AT LASTAmid all the frustrations South Africans have to endure because of persistent load shedding, the Polokwane Municipality has embarked on a electricity rehabilitation programme. The programme focuses on the free installation of electricity to dozens of houses within the municipal area.
About 1 500 households will benefit from the project which is already in the works. According to the municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Simon Mokoatedi, the project is to cost millions for the upgrading of existing infrastructure and the installation of electricity to poverty-stricken households. Mokoatedi confirmed that the municipality has already spent R1 million in Seshego on installing high and low voltage electrical systems. “For the past two financial years, we have allocated R1 million to meet the needs for electricity in every household. We began by upgrading the old infrastructure to supplement more power,” said Mokoatedi, further explaining, “This is part of the government’s policy to provide free basic services to the needy”.
The project is currently running in Seshego Zone 2 and 3 and has brightened the lives of many families in the area. Mokete Seshibe, a 72-year-old widow, is elated about electricity being provided to her family. She wasn’t able to pay for electricity since she uses her pension grant to support her family. “My life and that of my children and grandchildren is about to change. We have been living in darkness for the past 20 years and this is a dream come true,” she said.
