TRAUMA WEEKENDThe city of Polokwane experienced a restless weekend, with tragedy hitting from every angle. A man was injured in an accident on the corner of Grobler and Voortrekker Street on Saturday night.
An official on the scene said it is suspected that the man had been racing another car, when the traffic light changed and he tried to brake. He apparently lost control of his car and collided with a truck that was standing at the traffic light. The man was taken to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital with a broken left leg and right ankle. A domestic squabble ended in tragedy on Sunday morning, when a man (51) allegedly shot his wife (39), and then turned the gun on himself. Police spokesperson, captain Mohlaka Mashiane said: "The police are still investigating the murder of the couple. It happened at about 10:00. "The couple was arguing and the man allegedly shot his wife. We are still making enquiries about his death, but his private firearm was found next to his body." Another accident occurred on the N1 south close to the Protea Ranch Hotel on Sunday. According to police spokesperson, superintendent Ronel Otto, the vehicles involved in the accident were travelling in the same direction on the wet road surface. A Tazz lost control and skidded into a bakkie. "The six people in the Tazz died on the scene and the driver of the bakkie died on his way to hospital," said Otto. Sue Ettmayr reports from Heanertsburg that there was also a fatal accident in the area on Sunday. Professional hunter, Conrad van Rensburg (36) from Polokwane, was killed instantly at about 11:00 while he was driving on his Yamaha motorbike on the R71. Ed Widdop (56) from Haenertsburg Auto was returning home from Tzaneen in a Toyota bakkie. He was about to turn into the farm road marked 'A' when the accident happened. "Van Rensburg drove up at a terrifying speed, moved from the right side to try and pass me on the left. He couldn't adjust his turn and clipped the bakkie. Biker Johan Dinkelman, also on a Yamaha, rode into Van Rensburg and went over the front of the bike," Widdop said. Dinkelman didn't suffer serious injuries. The rest of the bikers, all on their ubiquitous Sunday ride, stood around in shock.
